M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University (Auezov University / SKU, formerly South Kazakhstan State University) is one of the oldest and largest multidisciplinary universities in Kazakhstan, founded in 1943 in Shymkent and named after the renowned Kazakh writer Mukhtar Omarkhanuli Auezov. It is the largest university in Kazakhstan by student count, with more than 25,000 students across Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programs, and 1,500+ faculty including doctors of science, PhDs, and academicians. Auezov University ranked 2nd in the 2024 National Rating of Kazakhstan's leading multidisciplinary universities, and entered the QS World University Rankings 2026 in the #731–740 band. The university holds ASIIN institutional accreditation, with several programs bearing the European quality marks Eurobachelor, Euro-Inf, and Euro-ACE. SKU maintains over 200 international cooperation agreements and runs 26 joint and double-degree programs with foreign universities.
